My favourite subject matter is gardens: my own front and back ones plus a vegetable plot I'm allowed to use. My interest in painting them is related to my concern that in St Ives such spaces are in danger of disappearing to developers, decking and car parks. The flexibility of mixed media suits me. It means I can build up the picture, constantly making changes and adding to the structure and texture. I like the way different marks can suggest different things. My pictures are meant to be as organic and weathered as the gardens. Using recycled materials - such as painting on scraps of card and sticking on bits of evelope and wallpaper - satisfies me.
