There is a book by Julie Myerson called 'Home' in which she investigates all the people who have lived in her terraced house since it was built. Her idea came from stripping off coats of wallpaper which to her was like 'history unpeeling itself' and which made her daughter observe that 'it's like we're just the top layer. And one day there'll be another layer right on top of us squashing us down'. I can relate this to my work which is based on my house (also Victorian and terraced). The layers in my paintings come from my habit of constantly making changes and my use of collage. But I like the way the layers suggest the aged quality of the place and the things that were there before. That the recycled materials come often from furnishings and things in my house as well as my past matters to me.
