As an artist I am aware that everything I create is a result of my feelings, experiences and knowledge. These come from the people I have known, the places I have visited, the things I have learnt, and the events I have witnessed.  I recognise how past generation’s ideas and experiences have influenced my development. Even though our ideas may appear to be new, I believe they are built on, or react to, the work of other artists.  All of these influences affect the way I analyse ideas and create my work.

Many artists have affected my work.  The influences of which I am most consciously aware include:

  • I love the boldness and confidence in Picasso’s abstract compositions, ceramics and sculptures and the delicacy of the work of his ‘blue period’.
  • The amazing texture and atmosphere in Turner’s paintings, which he creates with his fascinating techniques.
  • The spirituality in the simplicity and minimalism of Ben Nicholson’s work.
  • Francis Bacon’s use of presence and powerful imagery within a canvas.
  • The freshness and clarity in the early works of David Hockney, particularly the swimming pool series.
  • The freedom in the processes within the paintings of both John Virtue’s ‘London Paintings’ and those of Kurt Jackson.

Due to my early training in ceramics I have a passion for textures and tactile qualities, which I try to emulate within my paintings. My colour palette is based on earthy colours found in the natural landscape of Cornwall and the oxides used in clay and ceramic glazes.

I have experimented with various techniques and processes which product multiple layers of paint and texture to show subtle and distressed effects.  The layers in my painting represent time and its erosive effect on emotion and experience.

I use abstract life forms as a basis for much of my art. The abstraction of a form to me represents the ability to adapt and change and evolve into some thing new and exciting. The life form to me represents both the strength and the frailty of human form and humanity itself.
