In my painting I use texture and shapes that are evocative of cliffs and rocks. Recently the area around Gwithian and Godrevy has been of particular interest.
Often some other meaning transpires in the process of working.
Looking at my work John Charles Clark remembers a text, he wrote in 1994:
'Once again, the primeval spirit
throws shadows onto the
cavernous walls of our skulls,
but now there is a new story
to be read into them.'
I gratefully borrow his quote.
Printmaking – to me – is like painting with ink. It is a medium that conveys the rugged carved aspect of the landscape very well. I like to work in series where each print is unique. The phases of the moon are a prominent theme in my printmaking as well.
My drawing is about markmaking, more than about representing what is out there.
All my life - drawings and paintings based on the human figure turn into rock shapes.
